Hello Netherlands, everyone's second favourite team and the country of Schteve McClaren's adopted accent, though that may change again this coming year. The first game today is possibly the best on paper but has been far from the spectacle of Germany, the excitment of Messi or the frantic indecision of England. The Dutch are good, Robben and Sniejder were the talk of the Champions League, as much for their ejection from the Bernabau and subsequent route the final from Germany and Italy respectively. Alas only one of them could start as Robben is out injured or now and it wasn't until the 86th minute Sneijder came alive. A side starting with De Jong, Van Bommell and Kuyt aren't going to lack industry, but with Van Der Vaart and Van Persie partnering the Inter man you'd expect some nice flicks, tricks and interplay. Which we did get, but only when Van Der Vaart made way for some natural width in Elia.
Denmark look solid and well organised as one would expect, creatively though they had the flair and excitement of rollmop herrings. You've got to hope they step up against both Cameroon and Japan. If Bendtner is half the striker he believes himself to be, then at least registering in this tournament is a must. Kjaer seems a handy player, and if the papers carry even an ounce of truth we may well be seeing more of him next season.
